MORNING PRAYER Tuesday, 11 November 2014 Memorial of Saint Martin of Tours, Bishop Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom. One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving Blessed are you, Sovereign God, ruler and judge of all, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of this age that is passing away may the light of your presence which the saints enjoy surround our steps as we journey on. May we reflect your glory this day and so be made ready to see your face in the heavenly city where night shall be no more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Trust in God As the deer longs for the water brooks, • so longs my soul for you, O God. My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God; • when shall I come before the presence of God? My tears have been my bread day and night, • while all day long they say to me, ‘Where is now your God?’ Now when I think on these things, I pour out my soul: • how I went with the multitude and led the procession to the house of God, With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, • among those who kept holy day. Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, • and why are you so disquieted within me? O put your trust in God; • for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42.1-7 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 21 The king puts his trust in the Lord. The king shall rejoice in your strength, O Lord; • how greatly shall he rejoice in your salvation! You have given him his heart’s desire • and have not denied the request of his lips. For you come to meet him with blessings of goodness • and set a crown of pure gold upon his head. He asked of you life and you gave it him, • length of days, for ever and ever. R His honour is great because of your salvation; • glory and majesty have you laid upon him. You have granted him everlasting felicity • and will make him glad with joy in your presence. For the king puts his trust in the Lord; • because of the loving-kindness of the Most High, he shall not be overthrown. R Your hand shall mark down all your enemies; • your right hand will find out those who hate you. You will make them like a fiery oven in the time of your wrath; • the Lord will swallow them up in his anger and the fire will consume them. Their fruit you will root out of the land • and their seed from among its inhabitants. R Because they intend evil against you • and devise wicked schemes which they cannot perform, You will put them to flight • when you aim your bow at their faces. Be exalted, O Lord, in your own might; • we will make music and sing of your power. The king puts his trust in the Lord. Crown us, O God, but with humility, and robe us with compassion, that, as you call us into the kingdom of your Son, we may strive to overcome all evil by the power of good and so walk gently on the earth with you, our God, for ever. Psalm 24 The Lord of hosts: he is the King of glory. The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it, • the compass of the world and all who dwell therein. For he has founded it upon the seas • and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep. R ‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, • or who can rise up in his holy place?’ ‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, • who have not lifted up their soul to an idol, nor sworn an oath to a lie; ‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord, • a just reward from the God of their salvation.’ Such is the company of those who seek him, • of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. R Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, you everlasting doors; • and the King of glory shall come in. ‘Who is the King of glory?’ • ‘The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord who is mighty in battle.’ Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, you everlasting doors; • and the King of glory shall come in. ‘Who is this King of glory?’ • ‘The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.’ The Lord of hosts: he is the King of glory. O Lord of hosts, purify our hearts that the King of glory may come in, your Son, Jesus our redeemer. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. Daniel 5.1-12 King Belshazzar made a great festival for a thousand of his lords, and he was drinking wine in the presence of the thousand. Under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar commanded that they bring in the vessels of gold and silver that his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. So they brought in the vessels of gold and silver that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. Immediately the fingers of a human hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the wall of the royal palace, next to the lampstand. The king was watching the hand as it wrote. Then the king’s face turned pale, and his thoughts terrified him. His limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together. The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the diviners; and the king said to the wise men of Babylon, ‘Whoever can read this writing and tell me its interpretation shall be clothed in purple, have a chain of gold around his neck, and rank third in the kingdom.’ Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king the interpretation. Then King Belshazzar became greatly terrified and his face turned pale, and his lords were perplexed. The queen, when she heard the discussion of the king and his lords, came into the banqueting-hall. The queen said, ‘O king, live for ever! Do not let your thoughts terrify you or your face grow pale. There is a man in your kingdom who is endowed with a spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father he was found to have enlightenment, understanding, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him chief of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and diviners, because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and solve problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.’ Canticle A Song of the New Creation, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 28 (page 579), number 46 (page 598) or number 47 (page 599), may be said Refrain: I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. ‘I am the Lord, your Holy One, • the Creator of Israel, your King.’ Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, • a path in the mighty waters, ‘Remember not the former things, • nor consider the things of old. ‘Behold, I am doing a new thing; • now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? ‘I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, • to give drink to my chosen people, ‘The people whom I formed for myself, • that they might declare my praise.’ Isaiah 43.15, 16, 18, 19, 20c, 21 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Scripture Reading One or more readings appointed for the day are read. The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence. Revelation 6 Then I saw the Lamb open one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures call out, as with a voice of thunder, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there was a white horse! Its rider had a bow; a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering and to conquer. When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature call out, ‘Come!’ And out came another horse, bright red; its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another; and he was given a great sword. When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature call out, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there was a black horse! Its rider held a pair of scales in his hand, and I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a day’s pay, and three quarts of barley for a day’s pay, but do not damage the olive oil and the wine!’ When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature call out, ‘Come!’ I looked and there was a pale green horse! Its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed with him; they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, famine, and pestilence, and by the wild animals of the earth. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered for the word of God and for the testimony they had given; they cried out with a loud voice, ‘Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long will it be before you judge and avenge our blood on the inhabitants of the earth?’ They were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number would be complete both of their fellow-servants and of their brothers and sisters, who were soon to be killed as they themselves had been killed. When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and there came a great earthquake; the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree drops its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll rolling itself up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth and the magnates and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?’ A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. The heavens bear witness to your wonders; I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. The assembly of your saints proclaims your truth; my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. from Psalm 89 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or the Te Deum Laudamus (A Song of the Church) (page 636) may be said Refrain: I will give you shepherds after my own heart who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Refrain: I will give you shepherds after my own heart who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
