MORNING PRAYER Tuesday, 28 October 2014 Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. One or more of the following is said or sung: a prayer of thanksgiving (page 109), a suitable hymn, or A Song of God’s Righteousness Bless the Lord, O my soul, • and all that is within me bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, • and forget not all his benefits; Who forgives all your sins • and heals all your infirmities; Who redeems your life from the Pit • and crowns you with faithful love and compassion; Who satisfies you with good things, • so that your youth is renewed like an eagle’s. The Lord executes righteousness • and judgement for all who are oppressed. He made his ways known to Moses • and his works to the children of Israel. The Lord has established his throne in heaven, • and his kingdom has dominion over all. Bless the Lord, you angels of his, • you mighty ones who do his bidding and hearken to the voice of his word. Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, • you ministers of his who do his will. Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; • bless the Lord, O my soul. Psalm 103.1-7, 19-22 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 116 Gracious is the Lord and righteous. I love the Lord, for he has heard the voice of my supplication; • because he inclined his ear to me on the day I called to him. The snares of death encompassed me; the pains of hell took hold of me; • by grief and sorrow was I held. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: • ‘O Lord, I beg you, deliver my soul.’ Gracious is the Lord and righteous; • our God is full of compassion. R The Lord watches over the simple; • I was brought very low and he saved me. Turn again to your rest, O my soul, • for the Lord has been gracious to you. For you have delivered my soul from death, • my eyes from tears and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord • in the land of the living. R I believed that I should perish for I was sorely troubled; • and I said in my alarm, ‘Everyone is a liar.’ How shall I repay the Lord • for all the benefits he has given to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation • and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfil my vows to the Lord • in the presence of all his people. R Precious in the sight of the Lord • is the death of his faithful servants. O Lord, I am your servant, • your servant, the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving • and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfil my vows to the Lord • in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the house of the Lord, • in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Alleluia. Gracious is the Lord and righteous. As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, may we call upon your name, raise the cup of salvation, and so proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come in glory. Psalm 117 Alleluia. O praise the Lord, all you nations; • praise him, all you peoples. For great is his steadfast love towards us, • and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gracious God, we praise you for your faithfulness and pray that every nation may find your blessing in the face of Jesus Christ our Lord. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. Wisdom 5.1-16 Then the righteous will stand with great confidence in the presence of those who have oppressed them and those who make light of their labours. When the unrighteous see them, they will be shaken with dreadful fear, and they will be amazed at the unexpected salvation of the righteous. They will speak to one another in repentance, and in anguish of spirit they will groan, and say, ‘These are persons whom we once held in derision and made a byword of reproach—fools that we were! We thought that their lives were madness and that their end was without honour. Why have they been numbered among the children of God? And why is their lot among the saints? So it was we who strayed from the way of truth, and the light of righteousness did not shine on us, and the sun did not rise upon us. We took our fill of the paths of lawlessness and destruction, and we journeyed through trackless deserts, but the way of the Lord we have not known. What has our arrogance profited us? And what good has our boasted wealth brought us? ‘All those things have vanished like a shadow, and like a rumour that passes by; like a ship that sails through the billowy water, and when it has passed no trace can be found, no track of its keel in the waves; or as, when a bird flies through the air, no evidence of its passage is found; the light air, lashed by the beat of its pinions and pierced by the force of its rushing flight, is traversed by the movement of its wings, and afterwards no sign of its coming is found there; or as, when an arrow is shot at a target, the air, thus divided, comes together at once, so that no one knows its pathway. So we also, as soon as we were born, ceased to be, and we had no sign of virtue to show, but were consumed in our wickedness.’ Because the hope of the ungodly is like thistledown carried by the wind, and like a light frost driven away by a storm; it is dispersed like smoke before the wind, and it passes like the remembrance of a guest who stays but a day. But the righteous live for ever, and their reward is with the Lord; the Most High takes care of them. Therefore they will receive a glorious crown and a beautiful diadem from the hand of the Lord, because with his right hand he will cover them, and with his arm he will shield them. or Isaiah 45.18-26 Canticle The following, or another suitable canticle, may be said or sung Refrain: The Lord has anointed me and sent me to bring good news to the oppressed. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me • because he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, • to bind up the broken-hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, • and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, • to comfort all who mourn, To give them a garland instead of ashes, • the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit, That they may be called oaks of righteousness, • the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. For as the earth puts forth her blossom, • and as seeds in the garden spring up, So shall the Lord God make righteousness and praise • blossom before all the nations. You shall be called priests of the Lord; • they shall speak of you as ministers of our God. Isaiah 61.1-3, 11, 6a Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. The Lord has anointed me and sent me to bring good news to the oppressed. Scripture Reading One or more readings appointed for the day are read. The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence. Luke 6.12-16 Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow Open my eyes, O Lord that I may see the wonders of your law. Open my eyes, O Lord that I may see the wonders of your law. Lead me in the path of your commandments that I may see the wonders of your law. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Open my eyes, O Lord that I may see the wonders of your law. from Psalm 119 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or The Song of Christs Glory (page 619) may be said Refrain: You did not choose me but I chose you and I appointed you to go out and bear fruit, the fruit that shall last. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
