MORNING TOAST A captain of a ship stood at the helm of his sailboat. Its night on the high seas with calm waters. Two dozen men move above maintaining the ship. The year is 1414. A new device invented by the Asians in 247 B.C. had been passed along to the rest of the world....the compass. It was a game changer for some. Notice I said for some. See this ship captain, although equipped with a compass, was relying on a method of navigation that had been around for millennia....the night sky. Old reliable. The stars never fail. Like stone diamonds they hang upon nothing in the sky but the commandment of God Almighty. The captain knows should his compass, although a great asset that made day travel on the high seas much more efficient, should his compass shatter, the tried and true would never fail him. Fast forward six hundred years. The e-book versus paperback issue. New technology versus the tried and true. Like that old sea captain are those purchasing paperbacks. Tried and true, like those stars above, who coincidentally, still guide ships today. Ebook readers have a different method of attaining the same goal. Theyre the compass. The new technology of the times. When the compass came on board, no one got upset or jealous. It was a method used to aide in the big scheme of things, the ultimate goal for society during those times, which was to find a way east by heading west across the Atlantic. The ebook is like that compass. And those who use it for publishing, profit and profession should not be belittled. The same goal is achieved when one reads an ebook or a paperback...a story is told and is read. Its not the invention by no means. It all depends on who is using it and how it is being used. Ebook versus paperback? Its a non-issue....at least in my book it is. Im sure others agree. Good morning, everyone.
