MORTDECAI Directed by David Koepp Starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Whitehouse This is rather a mad concept film and I think if Johnny Depp wasnt playing Charlie Mortdecai, the film may have been in chaos and a complete dud of a film. It is about Charlie Mortdecai and an art piece that the Russians want and one of the Russian gang is obsessed with opening the balls as a form of torture (you really have to see the film to know why this is funny). So without any influences from anywhere else, I sat watching the film and I instantly thought The Fast Show and more so when Paul Whitehouse popped up as a cameo role in a garage – quite amusing. There are some strange funny moments and the film content is really the sort of humour that only appeals to some. I initially thought, what the heck is Johnny Depp doing but his role grew on me and you got to like his character. Depp works quite well with Paul Bettany who plays his butler come bodyguard and is not afraid of acting out mad scenes. Sadly, the script is all over the place so you have The Fast Show meets Dumb and Dumber. Youll either love it or hate it – I actually liked it. Ewan McGregor proves he can play camp but his character is just a bit far fetched - Should of just left it to Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany. Gwyneth seems to be playing the same role as in Iron Man and there are funny scenes when she keeps feeling disgusted that Mortdecai has a tash and hates to kiss him because it makes her want to puke – thats moustache syndrome for you. Overall a mad cap film which is very funny in places but film length needed to be around 80 mins because of poor script. 3/5 from me. https://youtube/watch?v=aW_sfxUnbZA
