MORTON — Norm Durflinger’s retirement from public service did not last long. Just months after he stepped down as Morton Village board president after not seeking re-election, Durflinger has been called upon to serve as the parade marshal for the Morton Pumpkin Festival Sept. 14. Durflinger served eight years as the village board president at a time during which the village planned and implemented a rehabilitation plan for the downtown area that has brought several new businesses to town and, according to the chamber statement, he also presided over the building of a new fire station, the establishment of the Morton Economic Development Council, and the creation of the village business district. Jennifer Daly, president of the Morton Chamber of Commerce and the Director of the Morton Economic Development Council, said Durflinger was a unanimous pick by the selection committee. “They just felt like Norm has made such a tremendous impact on the village in his capacity as mayor — prior to that as superintendent of schools — they felt that it was really well deserved,” Daly said.
