MOSIAH, CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR. The priests of Noah, renegades, whose wives were Lamanites, did teach the speech of Nephi at their many diff’rent sites. Shemlon, Shilom, Amulon, were lands where they did teach Language, arts and commerce -- but no Gospel did they preach. The Lamanites took quickly to this worldly enterprise – They learned how trade is done with nothing but a pack of lies. They increased in numbers and in wealth abundantly, By cheating and by plundering quite redundantly. They never cozened their own clan – for that was still forbidden. But for ev’rybody else, their scruples were well-hidden. When Amulon was put in charge of Alma’s converts, he Decided that they needed an increase in misery. For Amulon was dead in soul, and saw how Alma’s fold The Gospel with a merry heart were willing to uphold. He increased their burdens, like old Pharaoh in the Bible, And when they prayed for comfort he did label it a libel – He told the guards no prayers of any kind could now be said – Those that broke this rigid rule would lose their pious head. So they poured their hearts out as they silently complied, And the spirit of the Lord inside them did reside; Their burdens seemed but feathers and the whipping did not smart, The Lord promised delivery; they needed but good heart! One night, upon a signal, they did gather all their gear, And left the dozing Lamanites to seek the far frontier. For God had caused a coma deep to come upon their keepers; The Lamanites and Amulon were helpless, snoring sleepers. Once into the wilderness the people did rejoice, And praised the Lord with dancing, tabor, and their loudest voice. Alma hastened them to keep on going for twelve days -- Reaching Zarahemla, they were welcomed with amaze.
