MOUNTAIN CONDITION REPORT Yesterday I dont think Ive ever seen such a magnificent and large plume of snow blowing off the summit of Mulhacén, 3482m. I was at 1600m in the mountains to the north where there was hardly a breath of wind, but at 3000m in the Sierra Nevada it must have been very difficult to stand up. Incredibly cold too. I had reports of -8ºC at the ski base at Pradollano. At 3000m the effective air temp including windchill (feel) must have been going on towards an incredible -25ºC!!!! Southern Spain eh? Those windchill figures mean that any exposed surface of the skin will freeze very quickly. Needless to say you should bear this in mind if you are heading for the sunny, white mountains this weekend. The effect of windchill will be severe. These high winds will be creating a hard layer (called windslab) on the surface of the snow, so we have the potential for some big avalanches. The mountains remain with a very high avalanche risk for the next week. Feel free to make contact with me if you want help or advice. Richard Hartley of spanishhighs.co.uk for the EiALERT NETWORK
