MOVIE REVIEW - LET’S BE COPS Release Date: 13/10/14 Rating: MA15+ Director: Luke Greenfield Stars: Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., Rob Riggle, James DArcy, Nina Dobrev & Andy Garcia Run Time: 104 min’s Score (out of 10): 5½ Like an evil Alien-invader who milks a planet for all it can & then casts it aside for the next, Hollywood does the very same with its movie genres. War flicks are big for a while … & then they’re not. Sci-Fi the same. Ditto the ‘Vampire’ flick. It’s not to say those genres aren’t still being made, the market just isn’t flooded with them. And the same goes for the ‘buddy-cop’ comedy - long a multiplex staple with so many greats (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Rush Hour, Bad Boys) … which unfortunately though in recent years has yielded only the occasional nugget of quality (Hot Fuzz, The Other Guys, 21 & 22 Jump Street). And so we come to LBC. It’s not that it’s appalling - it’s just another in a long list of films that could’ve been great, but instead under-deliver in a major way. Johnson & Wayans - 2 of the best things about TV’s New Girl - play 30-something roommates who moved to LA to make it big, but quite simply haven’t. They go to a fancy dress party as cops, only to be amazed by the attention they receive. Plus, they can mess with people whenever they choose, get free booze at nightclubs & then there’s the ladies… Action & hilarity were supposed to ensue. On the PLUS side, Johnson & Wayans’ chemistry is fun, believable & pretty infectious. Riggle (the recent Jump Street flicks) also delivers. However the DOWN side is pretty much everything else. A terrible screenplay, a lot of unfunny jokes & some very ordinary performances. Garcia is totally slumming it; & it’s just as well Dobrev (from TV’s Vampire Diaries) hasn’t been beaten with the ugly stick as she’s surely no Oscar-winner. If youre not up to speed on Johnson & Wayans & therefore have lower expectations, youll probably find this just funny enough. But as far as classics of the genre go for me… [insert Dad joke]… this a Non-Lethal Weapon all the way!!
