MOVIE REVIEW: STILL ALICE Julieanne Moore leads in the SAG-AFTRA awards at this point, as far as Im concerned, at least. She portrays Alice Howland, a former Columbia Linguist professor who finds out she inherited a gene from her deceased mother that starts early on-set Alzheimers Disease, a form of dementia. Moore poignantly reveals the ravages of the disease and its effect upon all aspects of her essence. Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart are polar opposite siblings who react differently with the symptoms they witness. Sometimes, shes only spoken of in the third person, even while in proximity of her family. All the frustration, anxiety, and pneumonic exercising to cling to being in the now. So many people are, or have dealt with this dreaded sickness; my mother had dementia; my older brother died from early onset dementia, as well. Then, if not only being genetically pre-disposed to dementia is not enough, I have transient ischemic attacks...a neurological disease...mini strokes. Ive lost consciousness a few times. I have experienced not knowing where I was going, or not recognizing where I was; unable to remember names off the cuff; the speech impediments. Losing vocabulary...concepts. Things I learned while getting a bachelors degree and two masters. My hope is that everything levels out, or I can recover some sharpness with a reduction of stressors. I dont know. I love acting; but that is a challenge because--you have to memorize things. While filming in one of my productions, I had to have cue cards prepared for me. Me and the actresses rehearsed and knew the ensemble dialogue, but my condition can relocate the information. They laughed when they saw the cards come out. And I made a brave face of it, but I was humiliated. In conclusion, if you, or someone you know or love is going through this family intruder...WATCH THIS. Richard Glatchers screenplay shows an honest story. As for me, I am publishing a novel, and will continue writing, directing--and acting (with accomodations). Dont feel sorry for me, though. We all have our burdens. This film just described mine.
