MP Charlie Angus still fits in songwriting along with his duties - TopicsExpress

MP Charlie Angus still fits in songwriting along with his duties on Parliament Hill. In one case he was speaking with a worker who had to commute to the north to work in a gas extraction plant for two weeks at a time. Moved by the story, Charlie put this song together when he got home. (Source: a conversation on CKCUs Canadian Spaces Radio show.) Unfortunately theres no time for promotion of the album, but the Grievous Angels still get together from time to time. I find the ballad recounting the stress on family life imposed by the resource industry compelling emotionally as well as musically satisfying. I recall a concert by the Grievous Angels (original lineup) in the early 1990s (?) when the group was into harder-edged rock. I like this evolution toward unvarnished, pure-folk sound. As the songs writer, Charlie has the right to perform this whenever and wherever he wants. And also as a songwriter-performer doing his own material, Charlie has a more authentic musical voice than a Prime Minister who puts on a show of doing a Beatles tune for VIPs and partisan events. Speaking of which, Ive never been able to find out whether Harper, or his party, or even the taxpayers, ponied up for the considerable royalty due on a public performance of copyrighted material written by a famous musical personality.
