MPAVILION A bringing together of architectural design, art and performance is the cornerstone of MPavillion, a new initiative brought to Melbourne by Naomi Milgrom AO, Chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. Launching its inaugural program in partnership with the Melbourne Festival 2014, MPavillion, located in the Queen Victoria Gardens, will be open to the public from 7 October 2014 through until 1 February 2015. A series of talks and musical performances will be held in the architecturally designed pavilion and when not being used for a programmed event, the space is there to serve as a meeting place, a spontaneous detour, a destination or a starting point. As a four year project, a different architect will be commissioned each year to design the pavilion structure. This year, Sean Godsell Architects have been entrusted with the privilege of designing this unique space. As an award winning architect, Sean Godsell is well known among the design industry for many of his works, most recently the RMIT Design Hub. As inspiration for the 2014 MPavilion, Godsell referenced Australia’s iconic outback sheds and verandas, allowing the structure to respond to sunlight by unfolding each morning. This inspiration is evident in his concept sketches and no doubt the end result will reflect his initial reference to the iconic Australian structure. MPavilion is supported by City of Melbourne, the Victorian State Government and the Autralian Council and as a key driver for this new initiative, Ms Milgrom says, “MPavilion aims to create a new meeting place and cultural hub for Melbourne and our partnership with the Melbourne Festival is a fantastic start to our four-month program of events that will activate the inaugural MPavillion”. Entry to MPavilion and all public events will be free. The full public program will be announced on 1 September 2014 and can be found on the MPavilion website mpavilion.org.
