MPhil Studentship: Aquaculture of Marine Aquarium Species - TopicsExpress

MPhil Studentship: Aquaculture of Marine Aquarium Species University of Portsmouth - Portsmouth Start date: February 2015 Project description Aquaculture is now seen as a key alternative to wild collection for meeting market demand in the marine aquarium industry. However, many species suffer significant bottlenecks at key stages of their life history. Therefore, the majority of species are still collected from the wild and this is the case for all anemones. There are a number of species of anemone that are traded routinely and they can command high retail prices. However, evidence would indicate that they have low long-term survival in aquariums and are susceptible to transportation stress. This project will investigate the aquaculture potential of key species of anemone traded for the aquarium trade. The studentship is funded by UK Bred Ltd and based at the Institute of Marine Sciences ( port.ac.uk/school-of-biological-sciences/facilities/institute-of-marine-sciences/ ) which is an internationally renowned marine centre providing research and teaching , supporting over 200 staff, undergraduates and postgraduates, but with strong interdisciplinary links across the University, including the University of Portsmouth Environmental Network ( port.ac.uk/aboutus/environment/upen/ ) and the School of Biological Sciences ( port.ac.uk/departments/academic/biology/ ).
