MPs agree on live broadcast of Parliament debates Members of Parliament this morning agreed on a motion that was brought to Parliament last week by Selibe Phikwe West legislator, Gilson Shaleshando that Parliament proceedings should be broadcasted live on Botswana Television. When responding to the proposed motion, Member of Parliament for Kanye North, Kentse Rammidi said that it was important for electorates to understand what they, as MPs do and say in Parliament. “A lot of people end up voting for us without knowing what role we play in parliament and by giving them a chance to see us live , it will help them understand what role we play in the development of this country,” explained Rammidi. Sharing the same sentiments, MP for Ngwaketse West, Mephato Reatile said that it will help the nation understand their contribution and perhaps people will understand that they are not in Parliament to enrich themselves as most believe. “Currently people have a perception that once we are voted in Parliament we have a tendency to forget them and focus on ourselves,” said Reatile. In response, Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Dr Gloria Somolakae said that even though she agreed with what her fellow MPs were saying, it might take time to implement the bill. “As you know, the government is facing an economic meltdown, so to find funds to broadcast live will be a challenge for us because as we already have a list of priorities,” she said.
