MPs have cast doubt on whether the HS2 high-speed rail project is good value for money. The £50 billion budget includes contingency funding but, according to the Commons Public Accounts Committee this could be used to mask cost increases. The Department for Transport says HS2 will be transformational and theyre committed to keeping costs down. But the report also claims the benefits of the Channel Tunnel rail link, known as HS1, never materialised, as Barking MP and Chair of the Public Account Committee Margaret Hodge explains here.
