MQM asks Federal & Sindh governments to help resolve city’s power issue on war-footing basis Karachi, July 3: Condemning the prolonged power outages and unannounced load-shedding being resorted to in Karachi, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Coordination demanded of Sindh and Federal governments to help resolve the lingering power outages issue of the city, an economic hub of both the Sindh and the country, on top priority and, thus, bring an end to the miseries of the citizens in the persisting hot and sultry weather. In a hard-hitting statement issued on Wednesday, the Coordination Committee said that the prolonged power outages and unannounced load-shedding had made the citizens’ lives miserable in this hot and humid weather, thereby badly affecting the city’s trade and business, educational, health and other social activities. Terming the city `a backbone of the country’s economy’, the Committee regretted that it was astonishing to note that in spite of the fact that citizens were being forced to suffer the wrath of load-shedding, no measure were being taken at any level to bring an end to the lingering issue of load-shedding and, as such, this attitude not only amounted to injustice to the city and its citizens but also to cause losses to the country. It said that finding solution of the lingering power crisis was not the responsibility of the concerned power utility alone but also that of Sindh as well as the Federal governments, which it added, should make serious efforts by taking positive steps in this direction. Elaborating on the subject, the Committee said that the citizens were well aware about the performance, claims and commitments of the concerned power utility and in such a situation the citizens were being compelled to protest over prolonged outages and unannounced load-shedding. The Committee deplored that the management of the power utility has neither succeeded in increasing the power generation capacity nor in rectifying the obsolete power supply system. It said that the citizens were, on the one hand, being issued exaggerated electricity bills and, on the other, they were continuously facing prolonged and unannounced load-shedding and as a result of which they were passing through mental agonies. The Committee demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to immediately bring an end to the duration of power outages and unannounced load-shedding and take measures aimed at meeting electricity needs of the city’s economic, industrial and business activities and its citizens on war-footing basis.
