MR PANDAYS DAUGHTER IS BEING VERY RUDE Living a life of dignity with freedom prosperity and security. People in developing countries around the world are calling for these values. But the journey to achieve these goals is not the same in every country. Some make progress while others backslide into chaos. Why is the battle against corruption working in Liberia and why is Ukraine having such a tough time with it ? Is there a strategy behind Bolivias economic growth; and what are the reasons for Pakistans economic standstill ? Why is the separation of powers crumbling in Hungary and why is the situation stabilizing in Indonesia ? Since the financial crisis of 2008, there has been political turmoil in many countries and in some cases, the fall of governments. What makes our country Trinidad and Tobago so different ? The answer lies in the political maturity of the electorate and in particular the supporters of the UNC. Last year, while we were having four elections, as brutal as those experiences were, the government remained secure in office. The aberration of 1990 and the political mismanagement of 2001, has taught us, that the people are not about overthrowing a government, simply for the sake of power. In Australia last year, there was a change of two governments and three prime ministers and while freedoms are being curtailed in other countries, the Persad Bissessar cabinet was giving the media even more freedom. When the prime minister went to the Mandela memorial she invited the leader of the opposition. In Guyana, the President was criticised for not doing likewise. The signal the prime minister was sending was that she was about changing the status quo. Changing the status quo is not for the faint hearted. There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things, according to Machiavelli. Power is fire ! In September of last year, Thomas Bach was elected as president of the International Olympic Committee. After serving many years he sought to be vice-president in 2010 in order to lay the ground work for seeking the presidency. This was how he gained moral legitimacy. Prime minister Kamla Persad Bissessar started a political career as an Alderman in 1987, fought the Siparia seat in 1991, took the Oath of Allegiance in 1994 and has won the Siparia seat for six general elections by huge margins. From 1994 until 2010, no one knew of her ambition to become prime minister. What is the secret ? Patience is the supreme virtue of the gods who have nothing but time.
