MRI and cancer de mama More Than 72,000 Cases Included To examine the issue, investigators searched the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for women ages 67 or older who had surgery for newly diagnosed stages I-III invasive breast cancer during 2000 to 2009. Using procedure codes, they identified all patients who had preoperative MRI and classified the type of surgery as breast-conserving or mastectomy. The analysis comprised 72,461 women. Use of preoperative breast MRI increased from 0.8% to 25.2% of cases from 2000 to 2009. In the last year of the study, women 67 to 69 were most likely to undergo breast MRI (35%), while the oldest subgroup (84 to 95) had a 10% rate of preoperative MRI. The results showed that 43.3% of women had mastectomies and 56.7% had breast-conserving surgery.
