MSF South Africa: Anaesthetist Opportunity closing date: Friday, August 30, 2013 Opportunity type: Employment Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or to people that are excluded from access to health care. The organisation has health projects in more than 60 countries. MSF seeks to appoint an Anaesthetist, based in Kunduz - Afghanistan. Duration: minimum of six weeks Language: English Responsibilities: Responsible for surgical patients anaesthesia, in-charge of the organisation of occupational therapy (OT) for the anaesthetic part and of the supervision and teaching of the national anaesthetist doctors/nurses. Care of the patient: Surgical patient management: Perform anaesthesia for all the emergency and delayed (general and orthopaedic) surgical cases; Implement the pre-operative assessment of surgical patients; Supervise the post-operative care of the patients in intensive care unit (ICU) and surgical ward in collaboration with surgeons, IPD and ICU doctors; Ensure the correct monitoring of surgical patients in ICU and surgical ward in collaboration with surgeons, IPD and ICU doctors; Help in the improvement of the multiple casualty plan with the rest of the medical team. Respect of MSF protocols and recommendations, composed of: Implementation standard in protocols and guidelines in OT, surgical ward and ICU in collaboration with orthopedic surgeon, ICU and IPD doctors; Respect of MSF anesthetic protocols. Management of the OT and surgical ward Organisation: Implement the OT set up in collaboration with OT nurse and surgeons; Help the correct registration of patients in OT; Organise and propose suggestion for anaesthesia supply and equipment in collaboration with the OT nurse; Help implementing infection control in OT. Human Resource (HR) management: Organise schedule for the national anaesthetist doctors/nurses; Perform regular evaluations of the national anaesthetist doctors/nurses. Coaching and training Coach and training the national anaesthetists about compliance to the established anaesthesia protocols; Evaluate training needs among the anaesthetic staff; Help in the training of medical staff for multiple casualty plan. Data collection, reports and meetings Attend the MSF team general and medical meetings; Attend the meetings organised for the OT staff; Supervise anaesthesia data collection in OT and report the data weekly; Contribute to the monthly medical reports.
