MSN India r Reporting....In Chowringhee where the BJP made an all-out effort to defeat the TMC with its national president Amit Shah himself jumping into the campaign bandwagon, TMCs actor-turned politician Nayana Bandyopadhayay won by a margin of 14,344 votes. Nayana, wife of senior TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhaya, leader of the TMC parliamentary party, secured 38,328 votes while BJPs Ritest Tiwari bagged 23,984 votes. TMC all-India general secretary Mukul Roy said that the BJP was ahead of TMC by 30,223 votes in this Assembly segment in the Lok Sabha polls and the party had been able to narrow down the margin over 28,000 within four months. He said that there was a concerted malicious campaign against the TMC and Mamata Banerjee by the opposition and a section of the media. Despite this, people have repeatedly shown that they dont believe these and have reposed their faith in Mamata Banerjee, he stated. The Chowringhee and Bashirhat Dakshin Assembly seats had been won by the TMC and CPI(M) respectively in the 2011 Assembly poll. The September 13 by-polls were considered as a litmus test for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjees ability to maintain her popularity among the electorate in the face of the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scandal which has drawn into its vortex the names of several party leaders. The by-poll results along with the 18 per cent votes the BJP bagged in this years Lok Sabha poll signalled the saffron partys rise in Bengal, where it is trying to fill the void created by the marginalisation of the once-formidable Left parties and the Congress. Bhattacharya, who was the BJP candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, led from this Assembly segment by 30,000 votes, though he ultimately lost to TMCs Idris Ali. At the prestigious Chowringhee seat with its cosmopolitan make-up, Congress candidate Santosh Pathak once took a lead during the first two hours of counting. The Left Front, which suffered a rout in the Lok Sabha polls, failed to regain ground in the by-polls and secured only about 8,800 votes in Chowringhee. The Congress did better by securing 23,314 votes in Chowringhee. While the bye-election to the Bashirhat Dakshin seat was necessitated by the death of the CPI-Ms sitting legislator Narayan Mukhopadhyay, the one in Chowringhee became necessary after resignation of TMC MLA Sikha Mitra. The CPI(M) had won the Basirhat Dakshin seat despite facing a rout in the 2011 Assembly polls.
