MSNBC host Chris Hayes paid a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), calling him the real-life version of Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbacher — adding, “If ‘Joe the Plumber’ ever got elected to Congress, and was actually a plumber.” Mullin, one of the Republican congress members backing House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) call to defund the Affordable Care Act, resurfaced in the news after his remarks on Oct. 8 that the U.S. “isn’t ran [sic] by just one individual, it’s ran by four branches. But three branches that are in control of this.” “Not only does Congressman Mullin have an alternative view of the government’s constitutional structure, he also has an alternative take on where the president was born,” Hayes said, before playing footage of an August 2013 town hall meeting in which Mullins asked constituents, “Who would’ve thought we would ever actually be questioning if we had a natural-born president being president?” A spokesperson for Mullin said at the time that he was not a “birther.” The footage also shows Mullin refusing to accept documents from a woman calling herself a “birther princess” that she claimed could prove President Barack Obama was not born in the U.S. But Hayes also played footage of Mullin telling constituents how he could tell by sight that one couple was abusing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program. “This guy was built like a brick house,” Mullin said at the meeting. “I mean, he had muscles all over him. He was in a little tank top, pair of shorts and really nice Nike shoes. They were both physically fit.” Hayes also pointed out that Mullin accepted $370,000 in federal stimulus money for his plumbing business despite opposing the stimulus itself, which Mullins justified in 2012 by saying, “When somebody asks us to do a job, we don’t ask where the money comes from.”
