MSPs and The Prince’s Trust Scotland aim to get young people from ‘Learning to Earning’ Fiona McLeod MSP joined The Prince’s Trust Scotland at the charity’s Parliamentary Reception on Tuesday to explore what more can be done to help Scotland’s young people go from ‘Learning to Earning’. Young people who have been supported by The Prince’s Trust Scotland to find a job, go onto further study, or start their own business, took centre-stage at the event, leading presentations on the reality of being young and out of work and sharing their experiences of making the leap from ‘learning to earning’ with Scotland’s political leaders. The Reception at the Scottish Parliament highlighted the practical steps The Trust is taking to tackle youth unemployment and ensure young people aren’t left behind as they make the transition from the classroom to the workplace. Innovative work is being done in local schools and colleges to equip young people with the confidence and skills they need to re-engage in education, succeed in the job-market and take advantage of opportunities in Scotland’s growing science and technology sectors. Working with a wide range of partners from the Scottish Rugby Union to Strathclyde University’s Space School, the Trust offers young people at risk of underachieving in school unique opportunities to boost their confidence, skills and ambition for their future. Speaking after the event Fiona McLeod MSP said: ‘It is vital for young people to play their part in the political process so it was fantastic to hear their stories and views at the Scottish Parliament, speaking confidently to MSPs about making a real difference. It is vital that organisations like The Prince’s Trust continue to be supported by MSPs, the public and private sectors to help more young people achieve their full potential. East Dunbartonshire resident Nicole Gallagher is a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador who has been inspiring local young people to be the very best they can be and I wish her all the very best in continuing the excellent work she has already done.” The Trust works with unemployed and disadvantaged young people across Scotland, with three in four young people we support going onto a job, education, or business.
