MUGABE MUST DIE IN OFFICE - JABULANI SIBANDA A leader of liberation war veterans says President Robert Mugabe is still fit to seek re-election and will remain in power until he dies. Jabulani Sibanda, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association leader told journalists on the sidelines of the sitting of the Nomination Court that his members would ensure Mugabe retains power at all costs. Mugabe squares off with four other presidential candidates, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the smaller MDC Welshman Ncube, Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa and Kisinoti Mukwazhi. Sibanda said the 89-year-old leader was fit to run for re-election. “If you want a distance runner (Abel) Chimukoko is there, if you want a footballer Madinda Ndlovu is there, if you want party activists Jabulani, other war veterans and Zanu PF members are there,” Sibanda said. “If you want a leader, President Mugabe is there and we don’t need him to run, he doesn’t need to walk either, we just need him to be breathing. As long as he can still breathe, war veterans will make sure he continues being the leader of this country. Sibanda added: “The MDC will never win elections in Zimbabwe, and I tell you the sun will rise from the West to the East if the MDC wins elections.” Sibanda who has been accused of instilling fear in villagers defended his actions saying he only visits the rural areas to teach people about Zanu PF’s revolution against imperialism. Douglas Mwonzora, MDC spokesperson dismissed Sibanda’s utterances as comic. “Jabulani Sibanda is a clown; we don’t even take him seriously,” he said. “We know he is singing for his supper. Zimbabwe cannot be held to ransom by people like him. Mugabe will go in the next election whether Jabulani likes it or not.” Nhlanhla Dube, spokesperson of the MDC led by Welshman Ncube said the political reality was that Mugabe — who has held power over the past three decades-plus — would lose if the election were free and fair and conducted in an environment without fear and intimidation. There have been increasing reports of harassment especially in rural areas as the election campaign gathers momentum. daily news
