MULTI-PURPOSE YOUTH CENTRE TO START OPERATING OCTOBER The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, the Honourable Shaw Kgathi, has told Parliament that Gaborone Multi-Purpose Youth Centre should become operational in October 2013. The Centre, which was built with the assistance of the Government of China, was officially handed over in December 2012, but still had a few design inadequacies that needed to be attended to, the Minister explained, adding: “In particular, the fire detection system was omitted from the original design and scope of works. However, a company was engaged and the installation of the system was completed at the end of June 2013.” He noted that after the hand-over of the facility, some remedial works were still done at the contractors’ expenses as the contract was still within the defects liability period. Minister Kgathi further noted that the Botswana National Youth Council, who are going to occupy and run the facility, were serving notice where they have been accommodated in private office at the Gaborone International Finance Park. Gaborone South MP, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked the Minister when the construction of the Centre was completed, why it was not yet open for use and when Gaborone youth should expect the centre to be opened.
