MUMBAI: One trekker died and seven others, including a woman, were stranded at the Chanderi hill trekking point near Badlapur in Thane district till late on Saturday night. Abhishek Kadam, who is in his 40s, slipped and fell on the hill during the heavy downpour, and soon succumbed to head injuries. While teams of the local Kulgaon police and the fire brigade, an ambulance and other professional trekkers have rushed to the spot, rain, fog and a slippery path have made it difficult to reach the trekkers. The stranded trekkers were part of a group of around 48 Mumbaikars who had left for the hill on Saturday morning. When they began their return journey from the hill in the afternoon, heavy rain rendered the task difficult. Somehow, 40 people managed to climb down while those who were new to trekking got stuck in the hill. Prashant Ghevare, one of stranded trekkers, told TOI on his mobile phone: We have been in touch with the police since 3.30pm but have not got any help. Around 6.30pm, a doctor had reached us to provide medical aid to Kadam. He turned back at 10pm as he could not help us climb down. Prashant said though the group had managed to climb down and cover some distance, now our situation is dangerous as we cannot even stand properly at our current location. A police officer said though they had requested a chopper for rescue work, there was no point sending it in at night. Besides, visibility was even lower due to the fog. The officer said since the trekkers were stuck in an inaccessible part of the hill where the mobile network was poor, they would not send in help in time. The Kulgaon police station in-charge said, We have covered almost half the distance along with the fire brigade and other rescue teams. Due to the dangerous weather condition, though, we had problems reaching the spot. But we are trying to reach there as soon as possible.
