MUMBAI: The civic body is giving you one last opportunity to suggest how your city should develop for the next 20 years. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will organise workshops in every ward, beginning Monday, on the new development plan (DP). First up will be wards A (Colaba, Churchgate), P/N (Malad west) and M/E (Govandi, Deonar) on Monday. Hindustan Times, along with active citizen groups, have consistently demanded that the BMC involve citizens and NGOs in every phase of the plan for suggestions and objections. Participating in the workshop will help you know what the BMC has planned for your area. You will be able to demand more garden/open spaces, educational institutions, hospitals, emergency services or any other amenities. Urban planners said citizens’ participation will play a crucial role. “Locals know their ward best, which is why it is important for them to voice their opinions. They know the deficiencies in the ward and the implications if the BMC’s plan for the area is adopted,” said Pankaj Joshi, Urban Development Research Institute (UDRI). Civic officials said this is the second stage of finalising the Development Plan. “We have made a preparatory study of each ward that includes the status of every amenity plot, FSI available and requirements for citizens. In each ward, the plan will be presented to the citizens after which suggestions will be taken,” said an official. Hamara Shehar, of Vikas Niyojan Abhiyan, a campaign for better public participation in the drafting of the revised DP, wrote a letter to the BMC on August 7, demanding that all presentations with relevant data sources and maps be made available to the public. Shehar also demanded that the documentation of the workshops be uploaded on the BMC’s website. “These workshops are very crucial and we hope that the local level issues are discussed and the specific needs of each ward are highlighted,” said Aravind Unni, planner at the Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA).
