[MUNAK global agenda] # Agenda 9 Posted On : 17th September 2014 Agenda : Refugees The 1951 Refugee Convention spells out that a refugee is someone who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country. Refugees, usually fleeing persecution, are subject to dire conditions when leaving their homes. The first treatment of refugees was initiated by the League Of Nations, to aid those who escaped the Russian Revolution. In 2010, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) counted 43.3 million forcibly displaced people worldwide—the highest number since the mid-1990s. Even in modern day, people from Africa, Middle East, North Korea, etc seek lives elsewhere. When their situation is a result from conflict, UN peacekeepers seek to protect the refugee camps, in which they are given shelter. The UN family provides food, water, sanitation and other basic necessities. When their health is endangered, the UN system seeks to its protection. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has twice been the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize -- in 1954 and 1981.
