MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF POLISH JEWS IN WARSAW A new museum in Warsaw tells the rich and complex story of 1,000 years of Jewish life in the Polish lands. For most of its history, Poland was the most diverse and tolerant country in Europe. In 1939, there were 3.5 million Jews here. In many towns, they were a majority. In Warsaw, they accounted for more than 30 percent of the population. In eight sprawling galleries, packed with multimedia exhibitions and artifacts, the museum traces the history of Jews from their first appearance in Poland in the Middle Ages to the present day. The Holocaust, the part of the story that is most often remembered, fills only one of the eight galleries. For Jewish visitors weary of ideological histories focusing on genocide and resistance, these exhibitions may feel like a breath of fresh air. For Polish visitors the emphasis on religious tolerance in Poland’s golden age is something to be proud of. Visiting this museum, you have the opportunity to understand better the Polish civilization and to learn about the lost global centre of Jewish life.
