MUSEUM WINS AWARD FOR WRAPPED SCHOOL PROGRAMS The Manitoba Museum was presented with the Award of Excellence for the outstanding school programs at the Association of Manitoba Museums (AMM) annual conference in Dauphin, Manitoba on October 3, 2014. The programs were developed around the temporary exhibit Wrapped: The Mummy of Pesed. The Museums programs included: Explore Ancient Egypt for grade 3, Mummies, and Ancient Egypt for grade 8. In presenting the award, AMM lauded them as an obvious choice for an award nomination. Their education programming during the temporary exhibit was spectacular! Informative, engaging, and some simulated hands-on mummification. It doesnt get better than that. It is very exciting to be recognised by our peers, says Anya Moodie-Foster, the Museums educator, who developed these programs. Its not my award, its for the entire Museum. We saw the potential for this topic because of the strong links to the MB School curriculum. We tried to do everything the right way, drawing from the talents of the staff and trying to make the programs as hands-on and interactive as possible. Ancient Egypt is so interesting and Ive never had kids so excited about something. The Manitoba Museums educational program that coincided with the Wrapped: The Mummy of Pesed exhibit was thoughtful, innovative and engaging, says Heather Beerling, Awards Committee Chair. The countless school children that attended were both delighted and engaged. It is programs such as this that the Association of Manitoba Museums Awards Program wishes to recognize and celebrate in an effort to promote the successes of the Manitoba Museum Community. Wrapped: The Mummy of Pesed was seen by more than 40,000 people and saw the best school attendance numbers ever, with 14,260 students learning, among other things, the fine art of mummification, reading hieroglyphs and making clay amulets. The Manitoba Museum hosted Wrapped: The Mummy of Pesed in Alloway Hall, with the exhibit supported by Alloway World Exhibits program. Thanks to the generosity of MacDon Industries, The Winnipeg Foundation and new partner Power Corporation, this new travelling exhibition investment fund won the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerces 2014 Spirit of Winnipeg Award. The AMM awards were presented on October 3 at the Associations annual conference held in Dauphin this year from October 2 to 4.
