MUSINGS AT THE DAWN OF THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH Tea: Chai with a spoonful of (local) raw honey. Up at 5:30 am to run the lawn sprinkler because Mother Nature has turned off the spigot this past month. The sky is already light. The birds have been up for at least an hour. But over and above their song one can hear a few roosters greet the dawn over yonder in the farmland. Minerva McGonagall Laughner is happy to be up early. At this writing she is on patrol securing the perimeter against invaders. Organic pest control also comes with the feline package, and her sensors are on full power. When you get up real early on a Sunday, that morning is yours alone as the rest of the locals drowse in carefree slumber. Our famous southern humidity is here to stay now. But with the moist coolness, the yard and woods easily carry the sweet scents of butterfly bush, magnolia (full bloom) and honeysuckle. Dripping water off the trees will bring in birds to drink, bathe, and preen. Hummingbirds in these parts are well known for their fly throughs of lawn sprinklers, and we shall watch for them. Later this morn a trip to the Piedmont Farmers Market will yield oodles of locally grown blackberries, blueberries, peaches, tomatoes, corn, and more. Sunday is a good day.
