MUTUAL SPRING OF WATER & FIRE vs MUTUAL ORIGIN OF MANKIND & UNIVERSE 2014/3/28, 5:00pm, 4 of my former parishioners accompanying me arrived at Hsientsaopo Rottgen House (in memory of Bro. Lukas Rottgen, OFM)Franciscan Spiritual Center, Paiho District, Tainan District to attend Thanksgiving Mass of 30th anniversary of Ordination and 60th Birthday of former provincial Fr. John B Huang the following day. 2014/3/29, 8:00 am, We had 2 hours free before the 10:00 am Thanksgiving Mass, so we went to see the famous Mutual SPRING of Water & Fire - popular tourist spot and hot spring resort. It was the first time that I saw flame shooting and hot water flowing out of 2 caves only inches apart. Coming down the mountain, I kept pondering and wondering how orderly and harmoniously the world of nature and the universe obey their respective regular paths through the sky and the earth; but the world of mankind, people constantly, knowingly and foolishly play the off-track and shipwreck games hurting both themselves and others! Fr. John B. Huang speaking to the about 400 guests in his honor at the Thanksgiving Mass, specially mentioned that Pope Francis during the past few days had spoken to pilgrims emphasizing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as “Sacrament of mercy and forgiveness.” Confessors “always be ‘men of the Holy Spirit’” available for Confession “with the love of a father who sees the son returning, the shepherd who has found the lost sheep.” So penitents may feel an “experience of mercy and forgiveness!” The 3 striking occurrences before and during the Thanksgiving Mass gradually reminded me of the“Peace Prayer “and “Song of the Sun” of St. Francis, seeming that more than 800 years ago, St. Francis already conceived the idea like the “water and fire from the same spring” so also people and people; people and universe, “from the same origin”, .all are as brothers and sisters. Thus “Peace Prayer “and “Song of the Sun” became the entire lifestyle of St. Francis: to the world of conflicts (mankind), he played the role of peacemaker; to the world of harmony (universe), he played the role of minstrel! Pope Francis, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II both being canonized 27 April 2014, all admiring the approach of peacemaker and minstrel of St. Francis, as pilgrims visited Assissi. Throughout more than 800 years, many influential people including non Christians also become admirers of the peacemaker and minstrel of St. Francis. During the past year, Pope Francis has been acting with humility, down-to-earth and specially compassion towards poor and suffering has won worldwide admiration including Time Magazine as “The Man of the Year”! May St. Francis pray for us that in our daily life we follow his footsteps playing somewhat of the role of peacemaker and minstrel promoting harmony in our family, community, society, peace in the world and preservation of our environment.
