.MWENJE VS KANJWANG. The only man whom arguably could have given the legendary Kenyan comedian churchhill ndambuki a run for his yarns was The late David Mwenje. Like Plato(-the legendary Greek and western philosopher) who was a student of Socrates and a good teacher of Aristotle,Mwenje was a mastery of comics and a good teacher of waititu and sonko in the art of Nairobi politics. His constituency embakasi(he used to call it embagathi)was the largest in Nairobi and the most populous in the country. A son of kamau and waithira,from Kandara murang’a,he had modest education in accounting having completed all levels of the course.(A holder of CPA K).He had started his political career as a city father,(Kanjura) in early 70s.He was a man of diminutive nature. Only a few feets tall but his fame was gigantic.He is the brainchild behind anarchy in eastlands as he was, bellicose, unruly and a mastery of absurdity.He rose to fame in 1989when he attacked former vice president doctor josephat Karanja(deceased) on the floor of Parliament on allegations that Karanja was acting “like a small god in heaven, demanding that politicians kneel before him and claiming he was both acting (when Moi was away) and behaving like a president-in-waiting of Kenya. Mwenje rose under a standing order and told Speaker, who was Moses arap Keino (now deceased), that he would move a no-confidence Motion against the VP.The bell had tolled for Karanja, and four days later, the death knell sounded on his political career with the passing of the Motion.Karanja had replaced mwai kibaki as vice president and his exit on mwenje intiative paved a way for George Kinuthia Saitoti.Moi emerged victorious in 1997 general elections but had a serious problem. Numbers in parliament were too narrow between him and opposition. As a result, he made a coalition with Raila odinga.Fortune of some members started changing to the chagrin of david mwenje who was in opposition .Once they met at parliamentary bar with the then mbita member of parliament Otieno kajwang and an argument started.It later regenerated to physical brawl,and kajwang overpowered him and ensured he leave a permanent mark on mwenje by driving his fangs on mwenje’s back.Mwenje stripped in front of cameras and vowed to teach kajwang a lesson.He had a gang refered to as jeshi la embakasi.He mobilized them with nyahunyo,clubs and other crude paraphernalia.The gang took hostage on area around parliament premises looking for kajwang who went into hiding.It took interference of the then speaker Kaparo who read riot act to mwenje and company and the drama stopped.But mwenje comics never ended there.Once there was a black out in parliament and stubborn he was he broke into a song yote yawezekana bila moi.A day never ended without mwenje falling into trouble.His mode of travel was pick up hiluxes supplemented with his huge papa caps.He used to dwell at dandora and his home was like a clinic attending to people problems and he had no guards.He is the brain behind anarchy in east lands by inciting and leading squatters to invade private ranches. Many died in the melee.Sadly Otieno kanjwang has joined him in the path to eternity.
