MY ALZHEIMERS JOURNAL ... December 14, 2014 Sometimes life asks for an extra measure of courage. But I always believed to some degree that boyhood bravado, No guts! No glory! Friday we went over the tests we had this week, blood, cranial fluid, and scans. It was all a bit intimidating for not only was my lead physician there, but also the Director of the Experimental Project, attorneys, observers, and an ombudsman/attorney representing my interests. Why all the hubbub? Well, some very good news then brought us to the threshold of the next phase of the project. Signs of effectiveness with the treatment now called for us to enter into a phase of more aggressive treatment. And it was too be my choice ... I could continue on with a cautious approach ... but they needed someone to be willing to test the limits of toxicity of the medication. They needed to see if our present treatment was good, would more of it be better. They thought the risk was well within reason ... but the side effects might be rougher than I had known ... they really didnt know. But the decision was mine ... and I chose to make it mine and not my familys. After more than probably necessary detailed explanations ... and explaining all the legal precautions that would be put into place ... they left me alone with my ombudsmen ... and after I few prayerful minutes, I decided, Lord, we have come this far... so lets go for the full victory. So come the first of the year, we will climb the higher mountains ...and trek the wilder wilderness ... but I somehow I sense ... that the Lord has called me to make this journey to a Promised Land. Loved Ones, I believe we all must make our choices, always balancing prudence with faithful risk ... I am thinking you have done it and I have done it. What we ought to always to be prayerfully listening for ... is that Voice within which reassures our mortal souls ...It is I the Lord who makes this journey with you. The first disciples knew this ... and we who now follow in our time ... must follow. jim mcwhinne
