MY BFF, named BC, is once again demanding that I write about a particular topic. It is hard to come up with things to write about week after week, but BC has suggested that I write about INNER PEACE........the kind of inner peace that people aspire to each day. I know what she means when she says that it is hard to find the formula to inner peace. I must admit right up front that I am far from being an expert on this topic. People much smarter than me have written and given talks on this subject and if someone had uncovered the answer to this problem we might all have reached that place where we can say without a doubt that we feel like we are at peace. Not only with others, but with ourselves. It seems to me that inner peace is derived from finding ways to come to grips with those situations or people in our lives that make us uncomfortable. Achieving inner peace MUST begin with SELF. We like to feel that we are in control of all things in our lives, but the reality is that we can only control how we respond to the things that happen to us that may affect our ability to reach and maintain our inner peace. Inner peace is not a destination. As far as I know you cannot travel to this place and spend a vacation. You cannot look it up on the internet and make a plan to visit. If it was a destination I am reasonably sure that once people found it there would be a mass exodus by people all over the world to get there. The fact is that spending time in Florida, Rome, Paris, or some other place is nice, but most of the time we have to come home and that sense of inner peace is altered once again. The journey offers us a multitude of opportunities to feel peace, and like all journeys there are great parts and parts that we might not like or enjoy too much. Inner peace seems to be an ephemeral thing, but things that burn with a very hot flame that are extinguished quickly might be the most amazing things of all. Maybe it is the collection of these moments that we call inner peace. Maybe this is the key. To accept those hours, days, and weeks that give us that sense of inner peace that we want to badly. Maybe to ask for a never ending sense of inner peace is asking for too much. I know of few people who can say that they have had a sense of inner peace for a lifetime. Instead, I have talked to people who can tell me in great detail of times in their lives where they can say definitively say that they felt true inner peace. Practically speaking I am of the belief that we need to grab those shreds of inner peace when they become available. A moment spent with your loved one, a time with your children that you would like to bottle up and keep forever, or an evening on the back porch looking at the stars wondering what it all means. I think to ask for more than this might be greedy. There are plenty of chances to feel inner peace as long as we have open hearts, open minds, and an intense desire to be who we are without feeling the pressures of society and of every day living and surviving. I also believe that faith in something bigger than yourself, knowing that there is a plan for everything, brings me a sense of peace I can find nowhere else. BC, I hope this gives you food for thought and as you sit at your work desk today remember to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and remember a time when you felt the inner peace you want so desperately. It is right there for the taking, so take advantage of it. Work is just work, but INNER PEACE is making choices that give you sense of well being and a feeling of being enveloped by all that is good and magical. It comes and ir goes for sure, so be sure to grab it when it shows up people and store it in your memory banks so that you can bring it out when you need it most.
