MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY. It was about a decade - TopicsExpress

MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY. It was about a decade ago when we began the electrical design for these Five 22-storey towers and we initiated the use of the 380/220 volts three phase, four wire plus ground system (with all due respect to the late PEE Jesus C. Santos), using a main bus duct riser to the top floor and with the residential electric meters located on each of the 22 floors (each floor has 26 dwelling units except for the top 2 loft levels). We were one of the first to use this new voltage distribution system in the country. I remember that just after our presentation of the new voltage scheme to the Avida management, including the architects of PRSP Architects, then Architect Villavicencio of Avida, with the approval of then Electrical Engineer Mike Ylarde, would call the other electrical designers/consultants of the ongoing projects at Avida-Sucat, at Avida-New Manila and at Avida-Makati, among others, and advise these designers to consider this new cost saving and efficient design scheme for high rise buildings and large malls. Succeeding big projects in the Metropolis then followed suit to adopt the cost saving system, including the Trinoma, the Columns, the Serendra, among others. Not long after, electrical designers in Metro Cebu (VECO) followed suit for her high rise projects while it took several years before Metro Davao (Davao Light & Power) would adopt it. The first cost for copper conductors could be reduced by about 40 percent as compared to the 220 volts 3-phase 3-wire system. Likewise, there is a tremendous reduction in the copper losses (I squared x R) or there is a very much higher efficiency of the 380-volt system as compared to the 220-volt system. Since it was a new secondary voltage distribution system (the existing norms then were the 220-volt and the 440-volt systems), it took about 12 months for the provision of the transformer substation and the residential meters by the Meralco for the Avida San Lazaro Tower 1. Thank God for making us the instrument for the start of the widespread use of this revolutionary new cost saving and efficient electrical system in the Philippine electrical industry.
