MY ENCOUNTER WITH A WHITE POLICE OFFICER: Although this encounter happened a few years ago, I feel its worth sharing for three reasons: 1. I was in the wrong BIG TIME. 2. The officer was white. Im black. 3. Its good to be nice to people: I was driving my sons car. His tags had expired. The officer pulled me over. When I showed him my drivers license all he could do was shake his head and say, Are you seriously kidding me? Well, his face turned beet red and he just looked at me like I was crazy. You see, my license had been expired for two years. I have no excuse except that I hate those long lines at the DMV. Anyway, I started crying. I was sure he was gonna cart me off to the big house. Instead, he said, You dont recognize me, but a long time ago, you came to the hospital after my cousin had been shot. Everybody was crying and I was standing in the corner crying by myself. You came over to me and said, Come on, lets go get a candy bar. My cousin died that night and I will never forget how you were there for my family during their grief, and especially how you took time to hang out with an eight-year-old kid. We live in a cruel, cutthroat, dog eat dog world. Lets try to spread some niceness this holiday season.
