MY FAVORITE NEWSMAN. My dad would make sure that in the middle of working a 12-hour day on the farm, we would take time to gather for lunch at 12 noon to listen to Paul Harvey News & Comments. I suspect that is one reason I became a journalist. Paul Harvey also helped me gain a love for freedom and a respect for those who founded the most influential modern-day democracy. There are many who criticize the USA, and sometimes justifiably so. But most critics leave out some important facts, such as the fact that instead of keeping all the wealth and land of the nations the USA felt compelled to fight and conquer, it has consistently given those people back their independence and typically helped them rebuild their economies. They also fail to understand the great sacrifices made by the Founding Fathers of America to achieve liberty, to achieve that important democracy and to light that flame of freedom at a time when other people around the world were controlled by kings, dictators and churches that were in many cases more ruthless and murderous than the worst of the royalties.
