MY FAVORITE SCI-FI CHARACTERS: PART 18 REID MALENFANT The hero - TopicsExpress

MY FAVORITE SCI-FI CHARACTERS: PART 18 REID MALENFANT The hero of Stephen Baxters Manifold Trilogy, the awesomely-named Reid Malenfant is the most quirkily likeable jerk ever to cross universes. Back before Baxter started writing alternate histories, he wrote the most brain-boggling hard SF ever, and the Manifold Trilogy stands among the best science fiction Ive come across. And Malenfant is the perfect hero with whom to take the journey. Unlike most trilogies, the Manifold series does not follow a linear story; instead, each book features the same characters, but is set in a different universe. In Manifold Time, Malenfant receives a transmission from the far future and sets off on a journey to learn the fate of human life throughout the remainder of time. In Manifold Space, Malenfant learns that aliens have entered our Solar System, and he sets off to discover life in all its infinite variety throughout the universe. In Manifold Origin, the Moon disappears and is replaced by a habitable planet, and Malenfant goes there to meet its people--only to be whisked away once again across universes. Its fascinating to live the story of three different versions of the same Reid Malenfant, and part of me hopes that Baxter visits this wonderful character again someday.
