MY GOD IS SO BIG! By Lakan Mariano Why would you ever complain... or, whine... saying, God has lost track of me. He doesn’t care what happens to me? Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening? God doesn’t come and go. God lasts. He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn’t get tired out, doesn’t pause to catch his breath. And he knows everything, inside and out. Isaiah 40:27-28, MSG Whining and complaining are the weeds that sprout in our hearts when we fail to cultivate a healthy biblical soul where our faith can grow and flourish. All the feel-good sermons and books and articles we use for spiritual feeding will never hold us up under the weight of our day-to-day concerns, much less serve as anchors for the fierce storms that hit us from time to time. The people of God to whom Isaiah preached should have known their God and His plans. He never hid it from them. He told their ancestors before they walked in to the Promised Land the prize of their obedience and the cost of their rebellion (Deuteronomy 28). But day-to-day life, from week to week, year to year, has a way of lulling us to spiritual complacency. Then when trouble surprises us, our tendency is to try everything in this world. But God. Isaiah 40 takes our eyes off our problems and circumstances and focuses on where they need to be focused from the beginning. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the Lord as His counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the right way? Who was it that taught Him knowledge, or showed Him the path of understanding? (vv. 12-14). The prophet continues, Have you not been paying attention? Have you not been listening? Haven’t you heard these stories all your life? Don’t you understand the foundation of all things? God sits high above the round ball of earth. The people look like mere ants. He stretches out the skies like a canvas—yes, like a tent canvas to live under. He ignores what all the princes say and do. The rulers of the earth count for nothing. Princes and rulers don’t amount to much. Like seeds barely rooted, just sprouted, they shrivel when God blows on them... So—who is like Me? Who holds a candle to Me? says The Holy. Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this? Who marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name—so magnificent! so powerful!—and never overlooks a single one? (vv. 21-26, MSG). A childrens song worth remembering and worth singing says, My God is so big, so strong and so mighty theres nothing my God cannot do. When we see the bigness of God, when we know what He has already planned and how He sovereignly rules and carries out His will, we are less likely to complain and whine. Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth... they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (vv. 28, 31).
