MY MOTIVATION FOR THIS “CALLING” By: Arturo Pacheco Reyes, MD (The following is an excerpt that was submitted prior to my acceptance into the Medical School at Fatima College of Medicine) All too often, we searched ourselves for our innermost identity, and tried to surface the so called id, super id and ego in ourselves. Other people followed the footsteps and shadows of their ancestry. If their forebears are lawyers, they tried to be the same; and when others are physicians, they encouraged and groomed their children to follow them. In my case, I am a pioneer. I pioneered my family’s migration to the United States of America. Now over a hundred strong, they form a good chunk of the community and society in America. Having said that, I have achieved, thus far one has achieved in terms of historical posterity. It is my legacy! I was one of the pioneers of Pamantasan nag Lungsod ng Maynila in their quests for talented and gifted scholars to start an absolutely free university for Filipino-Manila Residents. I was also one of the pioneers in having been recruited in U.S. Naval Base – as first batch of Equal Opportunity Recruits to join the hierarchy of U.S. Navy manpower resources without having to be a cook first. As one of the pioneering Filipino Americans in the annals of historical footage’s, I was one the first pure Filipino ever to have ran for U.S. Senate (2000), U.S. Congress (2003), City and Council Member of the City and County of Honolulu (1998), and have vied for the position of being a Governor in the State of Hawaii (2002). I have not won the race, but my ideas and public platforms have won and joined the historical archives of United States Electoral Systems. After having attained those and after having had the unique opportunity of being selected in the Marquis Foundation of Who’s Who in America in their 2004 quests, I have always searched for excellence and have always been an achiever and doer and tried to find my niche where I can serve my community, mankind, the world, and humanity at best. I have been privileged to work in the patient care and advocacy. Among the numerous facilites that I have worked for have included the following: (a) Opportunities for the Retarded, (b) Kahi Mohala – A Behavioral Facility for the Mentally Ill, (c) Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, (d) Pali Momi Medical Center, (e) Numerous Nursing Home Facilities and Assisted Living Communities, (f) Rider’s Health Staffing Resources, and many others. The real life story of Patch Adams was one of my inspirations. Having worked in the medical facilities that I mentioned, I experienced the inadequacies of quality professional, and have witnessed first hand, the inefficiencies of those folks whom I have witnessed could have done better to provide better quality care to the injured and ill patients of our community. In the same token, I have interacted with patients and have searched myself, and challenged myself, and hope that I can be in a better position to deliver the better and best quality care to the sick people if and when I have under my belt the license and autonomy of a medical doctor and/or physician. Academically, I have prepared for this eventuality. I have always strived for excellence, and have been a government scholar both by the Republic of the Philippines and the United States. As a poor person out of a poverty stricken community, I know I would not have gone to college had it not for those scholarships that were generously bestowed on me by our governments. I have therefore equipped myself with the ingredients/requirements needed to make my ambition of being a physician real. With high level of awareness, good grades, talents, skills, and abilities, I hope to join the ranks of those elite professionals. We all know that most of the things that we learn in life are both nature and nurture oriented. Where and when we can train leaders, I hope for the best that I can be trained equally in super-fashion so that my endeavors to becoming a full pledged licensed physician will allow me to be their pioneer ever to graduate as an M.D. during my prime time. Heretofore, I hereby affirm, to support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the State of Hawaii, and hereby uphold to do so against all enemies, foreign or domestic…..SO HELP ME GOD!
