MY NOTE ON JUNE 12 Let June 12 lessons guide your conducts, Rep urges politicians A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ekiti State, Hon Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has urged politicians to allow the lessons of unresolved June 12, 1993 Presidential Election guide them in their political activities ahead of the 2015 general elections . Bamidele, a federal lawmaker representing Ado-Ekiti/Irepodun –Ifelodun Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, gave the charge in his message on the commemoration of 20th anniversary of June 12 annulment. Bamidele, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, disclosed this to newsmen through a message by his media aide, Ahmed Salami. He noted that the unfolding events in the political circle in recent time have shown that the present crop of politicians have only learnt little or nothing from the nation‘s acclaimed freest and fairest, but botched poll. According to him, politicians must tread cautiously, so that the 2015 general elections would not end the way of that of June 12, 1993. He warned politicians not to give chance for military to stage a come back to the nation’s polity, while urging politicians to be aware of the fact that blood of many Nigerians were shed in the struggle for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria. Bamidele averred that it would be a great disservice to those heroes of democracy if the current dispensation is truncated. “Of recent, the NGF conducted election and Governor Rotimi Amaechi won but a faction loyal to Governor Jonah Jang were laying claim to victory and the heat of the intrigues nearly crippled Nigeria. So, this is high point of desperation and Nigeria must be watchful as we approach 2015”. Bamidele described the late MKO Abiola as the Icon of democracy in the country, urging the “Southwest states to continue to celebrate his name in order to serve as impetus to the coming generations”.
