MY OLD LADY by Israel Horovitz CAST: Kevin Cline, Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas GENRE: British/US comedy/drama MISS KITTY SCORE: 3.5 out of 5 75 year old prolific playwright Israel Horovitz has adapted his 1990 play for the screen. In his directorial debut he has put together a competent cast to play the hapless Mathias (Kline), Mathilde (Smith) and Chloé (Scott Thomas), who are thrown together when Mathiass estranged father leaves him a Parisian apartment. The penniless Mathias quickly learns that the apartment is caught in an ancient (but actually still employed today) French system for buying and selling property called viager, and that he will not actually be able to sell the apartment until Mathilde dies. Moreover, he has to pay her €2400 a month for the privilege of inheriting an apartment he cannot sell. Kline and Smith are great together, but the plot—once you settle into it—is quite predictable, and Horovitz hasnt quite transitioned from a playwright into a screenwriter with ease. Nonetheless, its a lovely film and the scenes around Paris are superb. Also, its a delight to see Dominique Pinon (Micmacs) shine in his cameo as a Parisian real estate agent.
