MY REPUTATION (1946) directed by Curtis Bernhardt, with Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent. Warner Anderson, After her husbands death, He had written to her before hand asking her to please go out and live your life, your way. This film is somewhat dated in that the conventions of the time and her choices not to wear black or date men both came up to her and were dismissed. Oh course Mother and the town gossips had much criticizing to do. The film is actually An Interesting Study of 1940s Attitudes. There is something so powerful about saying something to her girlfriend. I have been a coward all of my life. I am not going to be one anymore. From now on I am going to do whats best for me even if it means breaking free of you and my so called friends. My Reputation is another one of those treasures that are not well known. As so many are. It was her moist favourite film. I can see why. My most favorite Stanwyck film as well.. Here is a question we can not answer. Does Jessica and Major Landis reunite after the fade out? I always thought that he was so wrong for her. He even said this wont work. The film was made in 1944, on the heels of Stanwycks great success, Double Indemnity, but was not released in the US until 1946. It was released to members of the Armed Forces first.
