MY SONG OF THE WEEK: “A Little Industrial Nachtmusik” (2000, 2013). This instrumental collaboration with a Monkee and a Synthesizer Wizard seems odd on the surface. However, The Monkees were one of the first pop groups to visibly promote the Moog back in 1967, so the bond was already there. This track is based on samples of the Davy Jones funk-ified version of “Oh What a Night,” running it through a blender of the “Shaft Theme” and Peter Gabriel styles (The Monkees did their own version of this ditty a year later, on JUSTUS). It was 1995. DJ and I were working in the remote rural studio of John Bechdel, the keyboardist tech-monster also known for his remarkable work with Fear Factory, Killing Joke, Ministry, Gary Numan, and others in that genre. Concurrent to the DJ sessions, I was working on my own album. We decided to merge forces to create this “sci-fi cop movie instrumental" (Blade Runner anyone?). The title vamps on a famous Mozart work, though the only resemblance to Mozart is my frenzied Mellotron flute solo. John and I are both big Kraftwerk fans, so the bearing of that influence was quite intentional. It was first issued on my FIRE CD in 2000, and it’s been used on a few radio commercials since. I’ve reissued it on this new download project because it fits the theme of “music for films not yet made.”
