MY TRAVELS TO THE AMAZON HELPED ME APPRECIATE SUSTAINABILITY IN A VERY REAL WAY Thats because the indigenous people who live there understand the essential values---and urgent need---to live in harmony with our natural world. Harvesting more than nature can produce is not just wrong---its a woefully short-term act that eventually results in barren ruin, and the end of the culture that depends on that natural system for survival. Which is why sustainability has been woven into a practical way-of-life there. I wish it were so for our own lives here in the most prosperous of countries, and was buoyed in the very best of ways by the symposium presented by the Pachamama Alliance and sponsored by the U.S. Green Chamber on Saturday at Wekiva Island. Pachamama---loosely translated into the spirit of Mother Earth ---arose from an effort to work with the indigenous tribes of the Amazon to help preserve their lands and culture. The goal of living in harmony with nature was translated into a moving half-day symposium that urged participants to think (and feel) about how to help our own culture re-balance the rapid over-consumption of finite treasures---such as our water and our springs here in Florida. The notion was surely a noble one as described in the title of the event: Connecting indigenous wisdom and modern knowledge for a just, sustainable and thriving world. Thanks to the U.S. Green Chamber for bringing this animated theater of wisdom to Central Florida, and to Wekiva Island for hosting it. Was rewarding to be around so many thoughtful folks who really do get it.
