MY2014COUNTOFBLESSINGS [2014 has been good to me. I am posting one blessing a day for 12 days and not necessarily in order of importance. I’m just grateful for the essentials of life and for particular episodes this year, so I am counting my blessings, naming them one by one to illustrate what the Lord hath done.] # 3 MY AFFAIR WITH BIKING The countryside has always been one of my all-time favorite sights. Too bad the hustle and bustle doesn’t allow me to see it much often. So when Jacinto E. Napalit and Merriam P. Mutalib-Napalit encouraged me to bike with them, I thought, why not. Biking would impel me to see the outdoors. Besides, the persuasion came shortly after my Mount Apo climb, so the temperature for adventure was still “high”. So high in fact that it overweighed the reluctance to buy a bike due to its “high” cost (plus the ensemble of accessories and gears). But all told and sundry, I found myself getting a new Specialized mountain bike. I’ve been biking for eight months now, sporadically of course. Much as I want to ride often, my circumstances just wouldn’t let me. But I’m loving it every time, especially my solitary afternoon rides through the backdoors. Not only does it keep me fit, it sure gives me the liberty to soak in the scenery all I want. The leisurely pace of life along the farm roads, the scent of earth and caress of mountain breeze elicit a medley of refreshing sensation. It stimulates some wistful reverie of the little barrio where I was born and grew up till I was 3 or four. This biking affair pedals me back to my simple, rural rudiments, reminding me to always keep my feet on earth, where I came from and to where we all end up. Who wouldn’t be grateful? Such Simple Pleasure. Such Blessing.
