MYTH NUMBER TWO (Continuation of Post Titled Myths Busted dated 19 Jan) We have a highly Nationalist and Patriot Army,which holds the NATIONAL INTEREST SUPREME. Army holds the National Aspirations in view and Acts and intervenes in the Supreme National Interest. There is Absolutely no Doubt at all that Pakistan Army(as a Matter of Fact Pakistan Armed Forces)are highly Nationalist, Patriotic and Extremely Trusted and Tested Forces. They are trusted, respected and loved by the Nation. Pakistan Armed Forces are the actual custodians of Unity and the Very Existence of Our Country. Armys being Highly Nationalist and Patriotic is beyond any Doubt and Not a Subject to be Discussed at all. The subject of discussion today is entirely different. It is to analyse the Martial Laws that we had in our Country to see if they were Actually Imposed due to the Corruption, Incompetence and Bad Governance of the Civilian Governments or there were Some Other Reasons. If we see the first day Speeches of all the four Martial law Administrators by the respective Army Chiefs, we find these to be almost identical. They all spoke of the Corruption, Incompetence, Injustices of the Civilian Governments and Well Being of the People. All these speeches were Honey to the ears of general public.All promised to eradicate the evils of the Society and to transform the Country into a real Paradise.This is Ecactly what the People wanted and aspired.That is why that All Military Rules and Rulers were Wholeheartedly applauded and Supported by the People.What was promised in these Speeches were The Actual Aspirations of The Nation. The actual performance and Achievements of these successive Martial laws is our actual subject and Myth for discussion today. There are Three Very Distinct Similarities in all the Four Martial Laws that we have had.These Similarities are very distinct, though spread over a period of Forty One Years(1958 to 1999),that if analysed in hindsight, these may lead us to some useful Conclusions and help Draw some lessons.These Similarities are as following a.All the Military Rulers correctly identified the problems faced by the Nation and promised to eradicate these and reform the Society.What actually happened is that after a couple of years of relatively better governance, all these Military Rulers decided to become Politicians, seeking to be Elected and Ultimately got Sucked Into The Same Old Corrupt Feudal System. Field Martial Ayub Khan (1958 to 1969) had the vision to change the Constitution to a much more suitable Presidential Form.This was undone by his successor General Yahya Khan,under the influence of a feudal Politician.All Promises regarding Good Governance,accountability, Justice etc etc Were Completely Forgotten and It was back to Business as Usual,in all The Four Cases.Not an iota of difference. b. There were Extremely Important Strategic Developments in the Region within two to three years of each of our Martial Laws.These required Pakistans Total and Committed Support. These Developments are as under 1.Indus Basin Treaty between India and Pakistan in 1959 and Indo China War of 1962(Field Martial Ayub Khans Martial Law was imposed in 1958) 2. Break up of Pakistan through a Military Surrender In 1971(General Yahya Khans Martial law in 1969) 3. Hanging of Mr Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in April 1979 followed by Russian Invasion of Afghanistan in Dec 1979 (General Zia ul Haqs Martial law in 1977) 4. 9/11 2001 followed by US Invasion of Afghanistan 2001/2002 (General Pervez Musharafs Martial Law in Oct 1999) c.Pakistan has had Extremely Cordial and Warm Relationship with USA during All These Military Rules Resulting in Military and Financial Help in abundance The flow of generous financial aid by US resulted in Temporary and artificial Economic Boom, Vanishing immediately after Each Military Rule. These Distinct Similarities deserve a detailed , honest Analysis to draw logical conclusions. a.All our four Military Rulers Failed to achieve their announced and very Popular Domestic Agenda of Reforms.As said earlier, after comparatively better Governance they suddenly decided to become Politicians and Democrats. Does it Mean that they were all incompetent to understand the implications or they had incompetent and dishonest teams. I am Just Not Prepared to buy this idea. Who stopped Them from Achieving their Goals,when they were Fully Aware of What They Had to Do,and had total wholehearted Support of The People. It is likely That This Domestic Agenda was only a COVER and NOT the AIM. b.Could allThe Important Strategic Developments as discussed above be COINCIDENCES happening not once, twice but Four Consecutive times,after The Military Regime was in Power in Pakistan. I am not prepared to accept it.If it were so, what Stopped these Military Rulers from Their Announced and Extremely Popular Domestic Reform Agenda. USA has dedicated think tanks which are continuously busy in analysis of World Events and Logically Foresee the future Happenings.They plan ahead.They sponsor protests, agitations and cause unrest in such Countries to create a situation where they can Prompt and Prod a Suitable Regime Change without making it Obvious. Keeping this entire discussion in view, I have reached a Conclusion that All the Martial Laws in our Country were Planned and Imposed on the Behest of the USA.I am ready and prepared to Believe that the Army Chiefs were used, wittingly or unwittingly,they may NOT BE KNOWING that they are being USED. The Myth that Army Takes Over Political Power and Imposes Martial Law for the sake of People, Their Betterment and for Reformation of the Society is Thoroughly BUSTED.
