Maaan, I recieved a text this morning that nearly brought me to tears. Last week I produced a spoken word film with CJ Cromwell for a poem called Them Over There that I wrote about otherism. When we released it we had a really whelming response from the first people to see it, and I was glad that people were getting it. My friend Neil Logik Donaldson told me that the poem was a really good tool for dialogue, and that hed use it with his youth groups! Well, this morning I received a text from a friend of mine Devi Chocolat who is a middle-school teacher, this what she said: I shared your video with my grade 6/7s yesterday. We are having conversations about the other and your video fit perfectly. They were so captivated. I had them do some free writing in response. Heres what a few of them wrote: First of all to the kids that watched the video and wrote a response; thank you. You inspire me. You are genius. I only read what your teacher sent me, but of what I read I was very touched! You guys hit the nail right on the head! Please urge your teacher to invite me to do a workshop with you guys, I want to see your faces and read the rest of these wonderful responses! I write these poems to scratch a creative itch most of the time, its impossible to know how they will evolve once theyve traveled out through my mouth or my hands and back into the world from whence they came. But golly G, I definitely did not see this one coming. Thanks Devonna, you da bomb! And to anyone else interested in turning this poem into an educational tool, you have my full permission!
