MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center (MAERC) hosted a program - TopicsExpress

MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center (MAERC) hosted a program for cattle producers and government agency personnel on Management for Economically and Environmentally Sound Beef Cattle Production on Friday, June 6th. The main goal of the program was to discuss and demonstrate management practices that are not only beneficial to ranch productivity but are also compatible with meeting water quality, water quantity and wetland goals on working ranches. The program educated participants on the water quality best management practices manual. MAERC showcased work on water retention in the Northern Everglades Payment for Environmental Services program, alternative water sources, the effects of land-use, fire, and grazing on wetland communities, and the benefits of dung beetles and their threats. After a morning of presentations, MAERC hosted a swamp buggy tour so participants could see firsthand some of the practices and research projects implemented at MAERC. Photos of the buggy tour show participants with Dr. Betsey Boughton, MAERC Program Director, and Gene Lollis, Buck Island Ranch Manager. The second buggy has participants with Dr. Hilary Swain, Station Executive Director.
