Macro and the (lowly) Cell Phone: I would like to toss out a topic for the group to mull over: the cell phone as a serious instrument for macrophotography. Any time one mentions Cell Phone on a serious photographic site, considerable heat and emotion is generated - the last cell phone post here generated 206 replies in an hour! However, this little box is rapidly moving from the obscurity of teenybopper party snapshots to being a serious photographic instrument. As a vintage camera photographer, I was dragged kicking and screaming into using my cell phone camera, but I have come to respect the developing capabilities of this device. The cell camera has two great strengths: it is always there, especially when you have left the Nikon or Canon at home, and, since depth of field is related to sensor/film size, its tiny sensor gives it enormous depth of field. In macrophotography, the latter can allow some images that are not possible even with a good digital SLR at a small f-stop. Admittedly, I am sure that careful analysis would show the tonal range, noise level and grayscale gradations are not as good as one would obtain with a professional SLR. However, having a sharp macro shot through this depth range can produce some unusual and very respectable images. What does everyone think?
