Mad Dog and the Bad Medicine Chapter 6 THE CAT FLAP creaked. Madog looked down and a chunky tabby cat was winding round his ankles. He nipped past him and stood up on his back legs and put his front paws on the door to a kitchen cabinet. ‘You want your breakfast eh?’ He mewed in answer. Madog had never thought of himself as a cat person. He was a bloke and man’s best friend is his dog, right? And then Iris, one of his neighbours told him that her cat was expecting kittens. She didn’t know who was going to take them; Madog said he and Niki would. They took Duke on more as a favour. He’s part of the family now. Madog shooed him away from the cupboard and pulled out the box of Go Cat. As he poured the biscuits into his bowl he noticed that the cat wasn’t there nudging his hand out of the way as usual. He was inside the cupboard trying to pull a tin of tuna fish out. ‘Beggars can’t be choosers,’ Again Madog tried to shoo him away again but he nudged him with his head. ‘You want a big breakfast eh? Had a long night? Get laid?’ Madog pulled the can out and rummaged for a tin opener and gave him a two course breakfast. The cat ambled across the kitchen with the rolling cowboy gate that reminded of John Wayne, and got Duke his name. Niki came downstairs blinking bleary-eyed. Madog looked up from feeding the cat. ‘Love you babe.’ He smiled and kissed her forehead. ‘Love you too,’ he told her. She gives him a sleepy smile and he asks, ‘want the usual for breakfast?’ ‘Yeah.’ Madog made a pot of coffee and two bowls of muesli. Niki switched on the kitchen radio and Chris Evans filled the air with inane chatter. Duke jumps onto the kitchen table and Madog noticed something new about him. ‘How long’s he had that?’ ‘What?’ ‘A new collar,’ Duke was sporting a black leather collar with studs in place of his usual black collar with hi-viz green fish. ‘Oh that,’ She rubbed her eyes, ‘I got it for him. I thought it was more his style.’ ‘So now he’s got two collars?’ ‘That’s right,’ she grinned, ‘one for formal wear and one for casual.’ He tried to work out which one was which. On hearing his name Duke mewed. They ate in silence for a short while, and then Niki reminded Madog, ‘you will speak to Inspector Swann this morning babe, don’t forget.’ ‘I won’t forget,’ he reassured her. ‘It’s important babe,’ ‘I know love…’ ‘It’s not every day you get married.’ She reached out and touched his hand. ‘I’ll talk to her and get it sorted this morning,’ he promised her.
